Neurosurgery for Clinicians

Centre Médic Alomar has an extensive experience in medical diagnosis by MRI and now we add the innovation treatments of brain disorders, women’s health myomas and pain relief due to tumours with an innovative technology, noninvasive and painless surgery,  done on an outpatient basis.

If you are a healthcare professional and want to know more about this technology, our specialists can do it more accurately.

ResoFus Alomar using ExAblate for Neurosurgery Applications

The ExAblate device for treating neurosurgery applications consists of a unique “helmet” like apparatus consisting of thousands of individual ultrasound elements. Neurosurgery treatments using focused ultrasound technology present two unique challenges. First, the high ultrasound absorption in bone (as described in the section on bone metastases) results in an increase in bone temperature which may result in brain-tissue coagulation near the skull. As a result, chilled water is constantly circulated around the skull during the treatment. Secondly, the skull has a variable thickness and density which results in the ultrasound beam being defocused. CT images are used to reconstruct the skull, and this data is used to configure the ultrasound beams coming from the phased array transducer to be properly focused at the targeted lesion.

Brain Disorders Treatments

The benefits of using high intensity focused ultrasound for precision lesioning in the brain have been understood for many years and were researched by early pioneers. However, the need for a craniotomy and the absence of imaging technologies to visualize the anatomy within the skull delayed its development. For decades, therapeutic ultrasound through an intact skull was considered impossible due to disruption of the focused acoustic beam and skull heating.

Neuropathic Pain

Neuropathic pain is a complex, chronic pain state that usually is accompanied by tissue injury. With neuropathic pain, the nerve fibers themselves may be damaged, dysfunctional, or injured. These damaged nerve fibers send incorrect signals to other pain centers. The impact of nerve fiber injury includes a change in nerve function both at the site of injury and areas around the injury. Neuropathic pain is often described as burning, stabbing, shooting, aching, or like an electric shock.

Essential Tremor

Essential tremor (ET) is the most common adult movement disorder, and as much as 20 times more prevalent than Parkinson’s disease. Millions of people suffer from the syndrome for many years.
Essential tremor is not curable. All available treatments today seek to lower the severity of the condition.

Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s disease, which results from the death of nerve cells in the brain, is a chronic, degenerative neurological disorder that affects at least one million people in the United States and more than five million worldwide. It affects adults of all races, and the risk of developing the disease increases with age. Recent research indicates that one in 100 people over the age of 60suffer from this debilitating and progressive disease (symptoms continue to worsen over time).
